NEW FACES

Some of our patients will have noticed that our former Practice Nurse, Sister Isobel MacKenzie has moved on to work for another Surgery.   Isobel will be missed by both staff and patients and we wish her every success in her new post.

The Surgery has been very fortunate to have found a very capapable replacement for Isobel and we have welcomed Sister Tracy Moore to our staff.    From the beginning of October, Sister Moore will be working all day on Monday and Thursday, Tuesday and Friday mornings and Wednesday afternoon.    She will be offering the following clinics:

- asthma                                             - well man clinics

- diabetes clinic                                    - dietary advice

- contraception                                     - Smoking/Alcohol counselling

- travel advice                                       - vaccinations

- well woman clinics                             - minor surgery

Sister Moore brings with her experience of working in both Raigmore and also at other Surgeries in the town.

Dr Helen MacDonald also joined the Surgery in the Spring .  Dr MacDonald usually holds clinics on a Monday morning, Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

HELP US HELP YOU

APPOINTMENTS

There is always a high demand for appointments at the surgery.

Anyone with an urgent medical problem will be seen by a doctor on the same day.  This will be whichever doctor is available at that time to deal with urgent cases.

If you wish to see a particular doctor, or it is not urgent, then it is helpful to make your appointment in advance.

There are a few people who make appointments then fail to keep them, or cancel them at the last moment.  Please remember that if you don’t keep an appointment then you have prevented someone else from using it.  Please phone the surgery to cancel the appointment as soon as you know that you will be unable to attend.

HOUSE VISITS

Whenever possible we would ask patients to attempt to attend the surgery because we can see several people here in the time it takes to do a single house visit.

However if you are too ill to attend the surgery, then a house visit can be arranged.  If a house visit is requested then we would ask if, whenever possible, you could please telephone before 10.00am.

Thank you for your co-operation.

THE NAME ON YOUR TABLETS

GENERIC TABLETS

Most drugs have at least 2 names.

-  a “GENERIC” NAME which is the name of the actual drug.

-  a “BRAND” NAME which is the name given to it by the manufacturers.

For example - Paracetamol is the generic name and can be bought as Paracetamol or under a number of brand names such as Calpol, Panadol, Disprol and Hedex.

Generic medicines may look different from the branded medicines because they are made by different manufacturers.  Although they may differ in colour, size or shape the active ingredient and effect are the same.

ARE GENERIC MEDICINES AS GOOD AS BRANDED MEDICINES?

--YES!-- generic medicines are manufactured to the same high standards as the branded ones.  They are just as safe and work equally as well as branded drugs.

SHOULD I BE CONCERNED IF MY MEDICINES

LOOK DIFFERENT TO MY LAST SUPPLY

Your medicine may look different because your doctor has chosen to prescribe a generic medicine.  If you have any concerns please check with your doctor or pharmacist.  It helps to know the generic name and strength of your medicine.

WHY DO DOCTORS PRESCRIBE GENERIC MEDICINES?

All doctors are being encouraged to prescribe medicines by their generic names instead of their brand names.

Generic medicines usually cost less than brand medicines.  By prescribing more drugs by their generic name the NHS can save money that can be used in other ways for the benefit of all patients.

For these reasons we at Culloden Surgery will be prescribing medicines by their generic name wherever appropriate.  If you have any concerns please talk to the receptionist  or your doctor.

FLU CLINICS

Winter will be upon us soon and the time of year for running our annual flu programme has come around again.

The Surgery will be holding flu clinics on Tuesday 29th October and Tuesday 5th November.  We will shortly be writing to those patients eligible for the flu vaccination to invite them to attend the clinic.

The flu vaccine is offered free to:

·         Everyone over the age of 65

·         Asthmatics and people with lung disease

·         People with heart trouble

·         Diabetics

·         People with Kidney Disease

·         People with diseases and illnesses which lower the immune system

Some patients, who do not fall into the above category choose to have the flu vaccine as a private patient for which a charge is made.   For further details of this service please contact the Surgery.

PATIENT SUGGESTION SCHEME

The Partners and the staff at the Practice aim to provide a high level of medical care.  Growing patients numbers and demands mean that we cannot always satisfy every patient so if you so have any suggestions about ways in which we can improve our service please let your thoughts be known.

We operate a patient suggestion scheme whereby patients can make suggestions to the Surgery and leave their comments at Reception.   Suggestions can either be made anonymously or patients can leave their name and address should they require a response.

We hope that you will find this service useful and help us to help you.
